Normally
when I write this column, I have to struggle and think
of what I want to say.
Today, this is not the case.
I know what I have to say and write, but the
words are still hard to come by, and I am certainly
having a bit of trouble putting them on the computer
screen.
Just
an hour or so ago, I was informed that my good friend,
and a great friend of all agricultural producers in
Canada, Paul Beingessner, was fatally injured this
afternoon in a farm accident.

The World Food Program, an agency of
the United Nations, announced last week that the number
of hungry people in the world rose this year to over one
billion. It is a startling number. It says that, though
the world continues to grow richer in many senses and
for many people, it is growing poorer at supplying more
of its citizens with food. This is not the way it was
supposed to be, not the way it was from 1990 to 2005. In
that time period, poverty (extreme poverty) in
developing countries fell steadily. Around 2005, this
reversed, and poverty, and with it hunger, began to rise
again. This has continued unabated.

Highway 41 is
sure nice. Re-surfacing is just about complete on a long stretch east of
Wakaw; there is a short stretch of older surface that is a bit rough, but
then another long stretch of quite new surface. That highway is about
twenty years old; it really shortened the distance from Tisdale and
Melfort to
Saskatoon
and has seen a lot of traffic, but it broke up badly when still quite new.
I suspect it has been re-surfaced, and in some cases rebuilt, several
times since then; let’s hope this new job stands up better. Right now,
it’s a joy to travel on.

He doesn't miss too many notes, but thing
is, they aren't usually the RIGHT ones. To say the blend
of voices is eclectic may be the politest thing that one
can come up with. Usually at 5:30 am there is at least
one human shouting out the window to SHUSH UP. |
